Greater Richmond SCAN
Working to Keep Kids Safe

Greater Richmond SCAN is on a mission to protect children, support caregivers, and educate and engage the public in the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect. Founded in 1991, this nonprofit serves the cities of Richmond, Colonial Heights, and Petersburg and Chesterfield, Charles City, Cumberland, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, King William, Louisa, New Kent, Powhatan, and Prince George counties. Its staff members provided direct services for 996 caregivers and 1,132 children from July 2024 to June 2025.
That’s a heavy caseload, but the professionals who work there are passionate about their mission. SCAN focuses on working with children who have experienced some sort of trauma, including physical or sexual abuse. Professionals also work with their primary caretakers, who could be biological parents, grandparents or other relatives, or foster parents.
SCAN’s programs include Child Advocacy Centers that provide a safe environment where potentially abused children can be interviewed and receive coordinated case review services from a team of professionals, including law enforcement officials, mental health and medical professionals, and social workers. Family Support Program strives to educate and support parents and caregivers. Clinicians within SCAN provide therapy to children and families who have experienced abuse or neglect.
SCAN holds a number of events each year including a community day to raise awareness of child abuse and prevention.
Greater Richmond SCAN is hard at work protecting children from child abuse and neglect.
SCAN reaches out to community members to educate and engage them in preventing child abuse. Through campaigns and workshops, SCAN staff train schools, organizations, and individuals to recognize children and families in need of service.
Another program, CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, trains volunteers to act as advocates for children who are involved in the court system because of abuse or neglect. SCAN’s Circle Preschool Program offers high-quality early childhood education and trauma-focused treatment to young children who have experienced adversity.
Katie Morris serves as SCAN’s grants and special events coordinator. She not only works to raise money for her organization, she also aims to make sure that it’s managed well, and she’s come to rely on TowneBank for sound financial advice. “Finances are what allow us to keep our doors open,” she said, “and we have a trusted banking partner that’s looking out for our best interests.”
Katie works closely with Curt Straub, senior vice president and commercial banker. “Curt attends some of our programs because he wants to learn about SCAN and be supportive,” Katie says. TowneBank advises SCAN staff on wise money management and joins in the mission to advocate for children.
“This is such a good cause,” says Curt. “They’re taking care of kids, and we’re ready to help out in a banking relationship. It’s rewarding to know I can help this great organization.”
“It’s really, really inspiring,” says Katie, adding that so many of SCAN’s services have a positive impact on families. “We have so many success stories.”
Curt Straub, TowneBank senior vice president and commercial banker, presents a check to SCAN executive director Jeanine Harper to help SCAN continue its important mission.
SCAN’s preschool program offers high-quality education for children who have experienced trauma.
SCAN holds several fundraisers, including the upcoming Progressive Dinner and Auction, scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2026. This will be the 24th annual dinner, aiming to raise or exceed $300,000 to put back into the mission.
