Nearly 50 years ago, William Handley started a landscaping business that continues to thrive in Greenville, North Carolina.
WAC Corporation (WAC) provides award-winning professional landscape installation, irrigation and water management, parking lot sweeping, and facility maintenance to contractors, property managers, and others in need of commercial services.
Today, Corey Handley leads the company his father started as its president and second-generation owner. He knows the business from the bottom up.
The TowneBank Story
“I was riding a lawnmower as a young kid,” Corey says. “I started out on a maintenance crew when I was old enough to go. I’ve done every job here.”
No two days are the same, which is one of Corey’s favorite things about the company that he now runs without his father, who passed away last year.
It was never his dad’s intention to be in the landscaping business full-time. Back in the 1970s, William Handley worked in banking. Landscaping was a side gig, but when mergers and acquisitions affected the financial industry, he chose to take an early retirement and focus on WAC.

It has since grown into a regional provider of commercial services, covering a 20-county area in eastern North Carolina. Corey continues to follow the principles his father set: Hard work equals success. Customer service above profits when necessary.
Corey invites customers to experience “the WAC difference.” Clients seeking commercial landscape installation, for example, benefit from the business’s longtime relationships with engineers, architects, and general contractors, which ensures projects are completed within budget and on time.
The company’s mission remains unchanged: Be the best provider of professional landscape contracting services in the region.
Serving Others. Enriching Lives.
Technology has helped increase efficiency in changing times. WAC uses battery-operated equipment and switched to alternative fuel years ago to power its mower fleet.
“The only way you can survive in the commercial maintenance business is to eliminate waste,” Corey says. “The margins aren’t there to be very top-heavy and waste-heavy in our industry.”
Corey is proud of the company’s longevity and commitment. “We don’t want to be everything to everybody,” he says. “We make a living in commercial landscaping. That’s what we do. We don’t do swimming pools, gas grills, or decks. We specialize in commercial landscape maintenance. We’ve invested in the infrastructure and equipment to cover a lot of ground efficiently.”
Keeping lawns of all sizes looking green and beautiful is an important part of WAC Corporation of Greenville’s mission.
WAC primarily serves industrial and commercial clients, as well as government and municipal agencies. Residential services are offered to select clients who own businesses or are involved with commercial real estate.
TowneBank’s Greenville location is a treasured client. WAC Corporation works closely with branch manager Glenn Marsh.
“TowneBank made a significant investment in our community, and we are proud to maintain that investment and see it thrive and grow,” Corey said. “I get a lot of customers who say, ‘We want to look like TowneBank.’”
