Reflecting on Mentors and Opportunities

SHARE
“The delicate balance of mentoring someone is not creating them in your image, but in giving them the opportunity to create themselves.” – Steven Spielberg
Andrew “Drew” B. Jordan (pronounced JER-Dan) DMD, grew up in the small town of Beulaville, NC, an hour south of Greenville where he studied business at East Carolina University. While earning his undergraduate degree, he became interested in general dentistry, and with the encouragement of a longtime Greenville dentist turned mentor, he enrolled in ECU’s School of Dental Medicine, never imagining the opportunity that awaited him upon graduation.
“When I was thinking about dentistry, I reached out to a local dentist who was the father of a friend,” recalls Drew. “I called him and asked if I could shadow him to get a feel for what dentistry is all about. He said, ‘Absolutely, I’d love to have you, any time.’ That was Dr. Don Hardee.”
“When I graduated from dental school in 2016, I came to work for him right away,” continues Drew. “After a few years, he decided he was ready – not to retire exactly—but to sell the practice and move away from the business aspect of things. I bought the practice from him in 2019. He is still with me in the office three days a week.”
Jordan Dental Associates provides everything from routine cleanings and preventive care to promote healthy teeth and gums, to cosmetic dentistry, one-visit crowns, veneers, implants and dentures, to emergency care that allows even new patients experiencing tooth pain to be seen right away, often on the same day.
Drew Jordan purchased his dental practice from his longtime mentor Dr. Don Hardee in 2019. Dr. Hardee still works with Drew at Jordan Dental Associates.
With a friendly, caring, and competent staff of 11— some who have been there longer than Drew has— the busy practice welcomed a third dentist, Dr. Ali Wynne, to the team in January. While growing and keeping up-to-date with technology, they continue to operate with the same core values on which the practice was founded.
“Dentistry is changing rapidly,” explains Drew. “There’s an influx of corporate entities that are owning and operating dental offices and some of the personal touch that was common in small town dentistry is being lost. Dentistry is becoming very transactional; People want things fast and convenient, and you lose the relationship feel. But the way Dr. Hardee operated and the way we still operate is very relationship-based. The most important thing to us is the relationship we have with our patients. By having that foundation, we’re able to do the best we can for them.”
Jordan Dental Associates provide compassionate and friendly care for their patients and recently welcomed a third dentist to the practice.
Drew says he is extremely grateful not only to Dr. Hardee but also to TowneBank for giving him the opportunity to own his own practice just three years out of dental school.
“2019 was the year I purchased the practice, and it also just happened to be the year that TowneBank started here in Greenville. Obviously, financing was the first thing I had to figure out. I had talked to a couple of banks here in town that were well established and had been here a long time, but they weren’t really excited about what I was trying to do and were hesitant to get involved.”
Drew was familiar with TowneBank from frequent visits to see his father’s family who lived in Virginia Beach. “I remember Allen Clayton, vice president and commercial banker, was one of the first people I talked with at Towne, and right away it was just a very different feeling. They were immediately interested, excited, and made it as easy as possible to finance a business acquisition. I have been banking with Towne for six years now, and they have been fantastic.”
In closing, Drew reiterates his gratitude to Dr. Hardee. “A lot about what was important to me and what I was looking for, he already embodied when I first met with him. I realized quickly, this is what I want to do, and I like the way he does things. I was very lucky to have a mentor like him.”
