PMA Nonprofit Leadership
Guiding Your Path in the Philanthropic Sector

In today’s fast-moving information age, trusted voices are more important than ever. Nonprofit leaders looking for strategic support and efficient methods to grow their mission have a globally renowned resource right here in Charlotte – Dr. Patton McDowell, MBA, CFRE. Since 2009, PMA Nonprofit Leadership has partnered with over 325 nonprofits, foundations and universities to build and scale sustainable organizations for greater impact.
Recognizing that one solution doesn’t fit every organization, the PMA team tailors its approach to each client. Their coaching model includes tracks for Emerging Leaders in Philanthropy, Leadership Gift School, the Interim Management Institute, and the Mastermind Leadership Program, a four-month virtual program that combines one-on-one coaching and peer mentorship for nonprofit leaders looking to drive their growth and development.
At its core, PMA programming is relatable, which has fueled the success of the weekly podcast, “Your Path to Nonprofit Leadership.” On each episode, Patton leads conversations with industry leaders and subject matter experts to address topics related to professional development and career planning in the nonprofit sector. Guests share practical tips, discuss common setbacks, and recommend helpful resources.
Recognizing that community banks are friends to nonprofits, Patton recently invited TowneBank private bankers Alice Joyce from Charlotte and Carol Holland from Raleigh to join the podcast. Their conversation explored how relationship banking helps to “lift” a nonprofit and give it greater visibility through community connections and access to resources such as board talent and in-kind and financial support.

“Private banking provides a very personal experience to nonprofits,” Carol shares. “Executive directors have our cell phone numbers and can call us anytime.” Patton noted that community banks provide a high level of support and direct access to local decision makers. “I have seen this firsthand as a TowneBank member,” he adds. “As my banking partner, Alice has been an amazing ally to our business.”
