Phil Jurney.

TowneBank Loses a Cherished Member

In Memoriam, Phil Jurney 11/9/65 – 8/19/21

It was with great sadness that the TowneBank family learned of Phil Jurney's passing in August. Phil served as president of TowneBank Charlotte and was a dedicated servant and friend to all.

A lifelong resident of Charlotte, Phil was a graduate of The Citadel and continued his studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where he earned his MBA. He was a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Banking.

Phil served the banking industry for more than 30 years, most recently at Paragon Bank which became part of the TowneBank family in 2018. Active in his community, Phil was a longtime supporter of Junior Achievement of Central Carolinas, the Boy Scouts of America, and The Citadel Brigadier Foundation.

Among his recognitions, Charlotte Business Journal named him one of Charlotte's Most Admired CEOs in 2019. When asked about the keys to building trust in an organization, Phil responded: "Be genuinely honest and treat others how you would want to be treated." His top piece of advice for other CEOs: "Have fun and instill fun with your team. Be a good listener."

Bob Hatley, former CEO of Paragon Bank, shared these memories of Phil, who became Charlotte market president for Paragon in 2007: "He was the perfect fit, with all the ingredients necessary for success in our unique banking model. He grew up in Charlotte, went to graduate school at UNCC, had been an executive at a highly successful community bank, and he was well known and respected in the Charlotte community. But it was the intangibles that made Phil special not only as an executive at Paragon, but also as a person and community leader. His personality was contagious and people gravitated to him. He always said, 'Tell me what you want me to do and I will do it.' And he did. His staff was very loyal to him and wanted to do good for Phil. He was a loving and caring husband and father. He will be missed."

Bob Aston, TowneBank executive chairman, adds, "We lost an extraordinary member of our Towne family with the passing of our teammate and special friend. Phil was truly a remarkable person with exceptional leadership ability that was grounded on a foundation of character, kindness, amiability, love of family and the joy of life."

The Towne family shares our deepest sympathies with Phil's wife Martha, son Taylor, daughter Rachel, and all of his family as well as our Charlotte teammates.

"Phil was truly a remarkable person with exceptional leadership ability that was grounded on a foundation of character, kindness, amiability, love of family and the joy of life."

Towne Insurance Moves to Downtown Norfolk

Towne Insurance has a new home in downtown Norfolk! On October 18, the Insurance corporate headquarters, previously based at Bendix Road in Virginia Beach, moved to the McKinnon Tower building, located in Norfolk at 3 Commercial Place, and the former home of Norfolk Southern Corporation. The Insurance team joins the Towne Benefits team that relocated to McKinnon Tower in mid-September.

"We're thrilled to begin this new chapter in our company's history," said W. Douglas Russell, president and CEO of Towne Insurance. "We are excited to serve our members from this beautiful new location and to have our Insurance and Benefits teams under the same roof. We look forward to welcoming visitors to our new home and encourage our members to come see the spectacular space."

Approximately 120 Insurance and Benefits employees are now based in the new building. It will eventually house the headquarters of Towne Financial Services which will include approximately 400 team members from TowneBank Mortgage, Towne Insurance, and Towne Benefits. The bank's headquarters will remain in the Harbour View area of Suffolk and TowneBank's Norfolk Main Office and Corporate Banking Group will remain in their current downtown location.

In June 2020, it was announced that TowneBank, along with Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, acquired the tower and adjoining parking garage.

Your local Towne Insurance family looks forward to working with you. Visit TowneInsurance.com for more information and to find an agent near you.

Towne Benefits - Medicare & Medicaid: Working Together

Outliving one's money frightens many seniors for good reason. The cost of living is rising, people are living longer, and healthcare costs are growing. Seniors are familiar with Medicare, but few know how Medicaid complements the program and may help eligible seniors afford health benefits.

Medicare is a partnership between the federal government and private insurers to provide healthcare options for seniors. Medicaid is a federal and state-funded partnership that is a safety net for low-income individuals. While their names are similar, their functions and qualifications are very different.

To be eligible in Virginia for Medicaid, you must fall below the state's financial requirements. If a senior qualifies for Medicaid and is also eligible for Medicare, they are called Dual-Eligible. Full Dual Eligibility pays for Medicare Part B's premium, most drug costs, healthcare copays, as well as provides funds for unlimited palliative care.

Medicaid qualified individuals could also consider a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Advantage plans for the Medicaid eligible offer an enhanced set of benefits such as transportation, meals, telemedicine, hearing aids, glasses, and comprehensive dental coverage.

Everyone's situation is different, and this is a simplified overview of a complex subject. If you have questions about how Medicare or Medicaid could provide assistance to you or a loved one, we are here to help. Towne Benefits' Steve Frazier can be reached at 757-249-5481 or stevefrazier@townebenefits.com. Steve is a Certified Senior Advisor and is AHIP certified.

TowneBank Commercial Mortgage - Tops in Affordable Housing Activity in Virginia

Congratulations to TowneBank Commercial Mortgage and founder and president David Beatty who received recognition from Virginia Housing as a top multi-family loan producer.

"On behalf of Virginia Housing, I want to congratulate TowneBank Commercial Mortgage, LLC for being among our top multi-family loan producers as determined by the dollar volume of loans closed in a calendar year," says Susan Dewey, CEO of Virginia Housing. "TowneBank Commercial Mortgage, LLC placed $24,659,000 of Virginia Housing multi-family loans in 2019 – a terrific accomplishment!"

David, who has partnered with Virginia Housing for more than 30 years, explained that the nearly $25 million in multi-family loans were in connection with affordable housing mortgages on two projects – Bennett's Creek Commons in Suffolk and Lexington Place in Portsmouth. "The $25 million is really only half of the story because that was the construction period loan," David says. "That then rolled over to a permanent long-term loan of $25 million. These loans strengthen our mission to support Community Reinvestment Act initiatives."

In her letter to David, Susan says, "Benefits reach far beyond just the bottom line; your success is shared with every vulnerable Virginian who gains the opportunity to live, work, learn, or raise a family in a safe and affordable rental community. As a trusted business partner, TowneBank Commercial Mortgage, LLC enables Virginia Housing to better serve our borrowers and your efforts have helped us achieve historic levels of loan production in service of the Commonwealth and its communities."

Virginia Housing, formerly known as VHDA, was created in 1972 by the General Assembly to help Virginians attain quality, affordable housing. By working in public-private partnerships Virginia Housing provides mortgages for first-time homebuyers, as well as financing for apartment communities and neighborhood revitalization efforts. They also offer free homebuyer classes, support housing counseling, and help people with disabilities and the elderly make their homes more livable.

David joined TowneBank in 2001 and has more than three decades of mortgage banking and brokerage experience. The Towne family is proud to have David as part of our team!

Take a Trip with Towne!

You may be familiar with Towne's Family of Services, including TowneBank Mortgage and Towne Insurance, but did you know that Towne can also help with planning your next trip? Towne Vacations is pleased to offer a variety of options for your next escape from the everyday!

Are white sand beaches what comes to mind when you think of rest and relaxation? Then Hilton Head Island might be the place for you. Beach Properties of Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, a Towne Family company, has been a premier rental company for over twenty years. All available rentals are on or near the beach, making it easy for visitors to enjoy a day lounging under an umbrella or a sunset walk in the sand. The carefully selected properties are all privately owned and decorated, making each a unique experience for your stay. Beach Properties ensures that all homes are maintained at the highest level of quality and provides special touches throughout your stay, including a discount program at many local restaurants.

Aerial photo of Hilton Head beach.

Rentals range in size from one to seven bedrooms and typically offer amenities like access to golf, tennis courts and pools. Sea Pines, for example, is located at the very southern tip of Hilton Head and covers almost one third of the island. In this gated, private community, guests can go horseback riding at the Equestrian Center or boating, fishing and crabbing at one of the two marinas. Additionally, Sea Pines guests can play on one of three Championship Golf courses or explore the trails in the 600-acre Nature Preserve. There is truly something for everyone to do in Hilton Head.

A little further up the coast, the beaches of Oak Island boast some of the most scenic views in North Carolina. Oak Island Accommodations, another Towne Family company, has over 600 rental homes and condos available on the beaches of Oak Island and in the nearby town of Southport.

A trip to Oak Island allows visitors to truly "go off the grid" and enjoy a laid-back, peaceful vacation. Activities on the island include fishing, kayaking, and boating. Visitors can also take a tour of the historic Oak Island Lighthouse. Picturesque views make Oak Island the perfect place to hold your next family reunion, wedding, or other special event. The team at Oak Island Accommodations can provide referrals for caterers, musicians, or florists for any type of occasion.

Offering quintessential southern charm, visitors can easily see why Southport has long been known as one of the best little coastal communities to visit on the East Coast. Southport was founded in 1792 and has maintained its historic small-town vibe over the years. The town is located on the mainland between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, but far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Many of the homes offer views of the intercoastal waterway, and ocean lovers are just a short drive away from the beach. Downtown Southport is full of unique boutiques, antique shops, and local restaurants for visitors to enjoy.

With opportunities for year-round adventure, Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland is another top-rated vacation destination. Railey Mountain Lake Vacations, a Towne Family company, has over 450 rental homes, condos, cottages, and cabins that will fit any size group. Over 100 of the rentals are pet-friendly, meaning guests can bring their four-legged friends to join in on the fun.

The list of things to do at Railey Mountain is endless. Whitewater rafting and rock climbing are options for the thrill seekers, while others may enjoy SUP (stand-up) paddle boarding or kayaking. Railey Mountain is truly a place where you can "choose your own adventure," with options to stay close to the action of the lake or tucked into the quiet mountains for a more serene experience.

A split photo illustration of lake, both in winter and fall seasons.

Our newest vacation property is tucked away in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Venture Resorts offers close to 400 rental properties that can accommodate groups of all sizes and are conveniently located near destinations like Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Wears Valley, and Sevierville. Voted by Southern Living as the #1 family resort in the Smokies, Venture Resorts is known for great accommodations and top-notch service.

Aside from breathtaking views, a trip to the Smoky Mountains offers a variety of activities, from hiking, horseback riding, and fishing. Local attractions include the family-friendly city of Pigeon Forge and nearby Gatlinburg boasts the iconic Dollywood amusement park.

With any of these great destinations, you can rest assured that you will experience only the highest level of quality you've come to expect from the Towne Family of Services.

Virginia Business recognized the past year as one that "has often seemed a dark time, with headlines dominated by COVID-19, the tumult surrounding social justice issues and our deeply politically divided nation. Yet, it also has been a time of breathtaking generosity…"

To compile the list for the Generous Virginians Project, Virginia Business surveys companies across the Commonwealth and then honors those who made charitable contributions of $500,000 or more. TowneBank's donations represent gifts to hundreds of charities and nonprofits in the areas TowneBank serves.

"Over the years, the word 'generosity' has come to be synonymous with TowneBank, and that is something that fills me with joy," said Bob Aston, executive chairman. "This is a recognition of the generous spirit of an amazing group of people who every day give their time, talent, and resources to help people in our communities."

Be Ready for Winter Weather – Towne Insurance Can Help

Winter is upon us and it's important to take steps now to make sure you are protected. Towne Insurance is committed to helping you and your loved ones stay safe and while we can't stop snow, sleet, or freezing rain, we can help you to be prepared. Making sure you are as ready as possible is vital for having a safe winter season.

Here are our Top 10 Tips for protecting your home and family before a winter storm:

  1. Make sure to have an emergency preparedness kit ready, including:
    • Sand to improve traction
    • Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment
    • Sufficient heating fuel
    • Extra clothing and blankets
  2. Make a family communications plan. Your family may not be together during a winter weather event, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together, and what you will do in case of an emergency.
  3. Listen to NOAA Weather Radio or to commercial radio/television newscasts for the latest information, and follow instructions given by local officials.
  4. Minimize travel. Keep a disaster supply kit in your vehicle.
  5. Bring pets and companion animals inside during winter weather.
  6. Before a storm hits, clear rain gutters, repair roof leaks, and cut away tree branches that could fall on a house or other structure during a storm.
  7. Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected every year.
  8. Insulate pipes with insulation or newspapers and plastic and allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing. Learn how to shut off water valves in case a pipe bursts.
  9. Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure everyone in your house knows how to use them. House fires pose an additional risk, as more people turn to alternate heating sources without taking the necessary safety precautions.
  10. Hire a contractor to check the structural ability of the roof to sustain unusually heavy weight from the accumulation of snow or water, if drains on flat roofs do not work.

While you can't always predict how winter weather will affect your home or family, the proper insurance can go a long way toward protecting your finances. To learn more about the specific policies available to you, it's important to work with a qualified insurance broker.

Your local Towne Insurance family members would be happy to help you prepare. Visit TowneInsurance.com to find an agent near you.

DOES YOUR ESTATE PLAN ACCOUNT FOR YOUR DIGITAL ASSETS?

As part of an ongoing series in TowneToday, the professionals located at Towne Wealth Management are pleased to provide informative articles on a variety of investment topics. In this issue, The Bray-Harris Group explain how to ensure your estate plan provides access to important records and sentimental memories for your family members.

Estate and giving

Online services, important documents and family mementos can carry great value.

Unlike tangible items like heirloom jewelry and vacation homes, or intangible but well-established considerations like financial securities and accounts, digital assets aren't always top of mind when building and maintaining an estate plan. But to neglect those digital assets may lead to difficulty and heartache for family members later – and could lead to the loss of items with incredible value, both sentimental and monetary.

There can be other benefits to organizing your digital assets as well, such as in the case of an emergency. If you became incapacitated, could your loved ones access your important accounts for everything from utility bills to medical clinic portals?

As the number and types of digital assets are continually growing and are locked behind a hodgepodge of companies, usernames and passwords, getting a handle on your digital estate can be tricky. A diligent, steady approach to inventorying your digital life can help bring order to this process.

What's a digital asset?

While you may not want to bother with a $2.99 crossword puzzle app and may not own a $64 million non-fungible token for a piece of digital art, these two extremes show the scope and evolving nature of digital assets.

More common examples include financial accounts, service accounts, legal and financial documents, cloud storage and health records, as well as online photo, video, and music collections. You may also want to make your email and social media accounts accessible to loved ones so when the time comes they can be closed with a graceful denouement or established as a lasting online memorial.

Making an inventory

In short, digital assets are a wide category including things like video game collections worth thousands, digital currency wallets worth hundreds of thousands, and family photos and home movies that are priceless.

Luckily, once introduced to the idea of a digital estate, you'll likely find it easy to identify and plan for assets and accounts. Puzzle apps? Probably not worth worrying about. Emailed love letters? Absolutely essential. This gradual method will likely be more effective and comprehensive than trying to compile a complete list from the get-go.

Consolidated storage

For digital assets not tied to specific service accounts, including photos, videos, and PDFs of health records and legal paperwork, you may consider setting up a cloud-based backup system to consolidate disparate devices, accounts and services. Your advisor has access to some of these tools that can help you organize your assets while providing gated access and rigorous cybersecurity.

For online accounts, it's a good idea to change passwords regularly for security reasons. A secure password manager can make it easier to manage strong, complex passwords and simpler for loved ones to access the accounts if needed.

Like any other asset, more or less

Creating an estate plan is an act of love. By making your intentions clear with a holistic, comprehensive plan, you help reduce additional stress and friction for your loved ones as they grieve. Though the understanding of the value of digital assets is fairly new, accounting for them in an estate plan follows the same foundational principals as with any other asset.

The Raymond James financial advisors at Towne Wealth Management know it's better to have a plan too early than to be in need of one all of a sudden. Talk to your professional team about accounting for digital assets in your holistic long-term plan. Please contact any of our financial advisors with questions at 757-638-6850.
